Day 614 - Feb 2, 2010

Haha. Kevin was just trying to talk me into jumping out of an airplane. That boy is NUTS! Seriously - he was just 'talking' about how fun it was and how proud he feels that he did it. And he just kept pointing at me basically telling me that I need to try it. He is just so hilarious, eh?

So today I left Kevin with Par and went to see my dad for a while. My dad is doing so much better. I have to admit that I was getting worried because he was all messed up cognitively, but today he was finally normal. And he got moved out of ICU too. They thought it would be a while, but they pulled one of the drains out of his stomach and sent him upstairs. He still has four more that need to come out, but hopefully over the next few days.

And while I was gone Kevin found his camera in amongst all of his Army stuff. He musta grabbed some batteries out of the drawer and he proceeded to take pictures of Parshall and her daughter Jeilah (Kevin was grumpy about having to stay home so I had Par bring Jeilah to keep Kevin entertained. He really just loves kids). So here are some pics:

The first one Kevin took of Parshall and Jeilah:

And this one Parshall must have taken:

Cute, huh? Kevin really loves taking pictures too. I think I am going to have to 'push' this hobby a little bit. I just don't know how he does it with one hand to both hold the camera and snap the picture, but he does it and he does it well. I am just going to have to remember to grab his camera when I am grabbing mine.

Well you know all kinds of things happen that we don't expect, so maybe you will jump out of an airplane one day! :) Eventually Kevin might be able to jump as well. Maybe with someone else with him but he would probably love it! :) I don't have any idea on the rules of all of it of course but couldn't he go together with another jumper sometime down the road? I think it would make him so happy! I remember when you said he was pretty upset one day about not being able to jump out of the airplane. Anyway, that's good he's thinking about other ideas including you! :) He probably wants you to have as much fun as he did. :)
I'm so glad your dad is doing better and out of ICU! It's moving in the right direction! :) Yeah!!!! :)
The pictures with Parshall and her daughter are great! It looks like Kevin enjoys them as well! I'm so glad you found someone that you can leave Kevin with when you need to be gone.
Have a great Wednesday!

Hello Leslie,

When you get a chance...yea-ya I know "when" lol, lol...talk to the jumpers at a jump school about "Buddy-jumps". E-mail them some pics of Kevin and then you can discuss with them the possibilities of a "jump" for Kevin. If Kevin needs to be able to do certain things make a check- list and work toward that.
Get out a picture of Kevin maybe doing a "jump" and put the check-list under it and tell him that that's what needs to be done first before a "Buddy-Jump" can be done.
Do you think he would go ballistic??
Would it work as an incentive on his P.T.??

Oh and Leslie....make that "Buddy-Jump" a team effort with lots of pics because there will be some of us out here that will have to see to believe. "You floating down to earth under a parachute."
Just keep thinking if President Bush "1" could do it in his 70's then it should be a piece of cake.

Kevin certainly takes a great picture with one hand. And yes, push him taking pictures! It looks like something he enjoyed because he could do it by himself. Then have him start scrapping his own pictures. He's good at that too.

It's great that Kevin really likes Parshall. It's even better that Parshall shares her daughter, Jeilah, with him.
Maybe next time Kevin has a pool party, he will invite Jeilah. Nothing like a bunch of kids in the pool.

Glad to hear your Dad is IMPROVING. Prayers to him and the family.

Finally glad to see Parshall since "she" ( I know many here called Parshall a man, lol ) plays such a key part in Kevin's life. Her heart obviously is in the right place and she must be excellent at her job because she has been with you all for a while now. Her daughter is beautiful and so is she. She will grow up to be a compassionate and caring person just like her Mother. What a good thing to do to ask her to bring her daughter along. Good news about your Dad. Kevin can do anything he sets his mind to doing and that is amazing his "brain" is starting to remember all kinds of things, including when he jumped out of airplanes. What does that tell you ? His new words, remembering things, talking better- seems like his brain is slowly fixing itself. Wouldn't that be just wonderful ? Good things come to those who wait. : )

I just read the USA Today article. It does make me sick how the government wastes money and gives millions away to other countries, but will not do the obvious for their own. Also, the comment that Bob Woodruff made about caretakers hiding their emotions is right on, huh Leslie?

Tracey from Pgh, ( in last nights post ) you are so right. Many people are so upset with all of the money the goverment is using and sending "out" of the USA. If you have a child hurt in an accident, an adult parent, your husband / your wife- alone and ill and no one else can care for these loved ones, YOU become the caregiver. WE become you, Leslie. We are weary, we no longer have our job, as our loved ones take up all of our time and energy and strength. What are we supposed to do, put them out on the street? We would never do that because they are "our life" and loves. We do like you and give of ourselves 24 / 7 because our loved ones are special to us too. Where is the money to come from to help US care for OUR loved ones ? Kevin is being cared for and it is such a blessing that he was serving our country ( thank you again Kevin ) or you guys would be just in the same situation that other caregivers in the USA are also in. Kevin seems to not be wanting for anything ( financially ) and you are so lucky. You need to share where you get so much financial help, oh please. Have you ever considered writing a pamphlet to aid other caregivers, especially with their finances as you are doing so well and obviously doing something right. Some of the money our government is using to aid others.. needs to at least help in care for it's own people. There is money to "bail out" every institution. There are many little kids here, in the USA, who go to bed every single night hungry.

Loved the pics, and who wouldn't love that little girl? She is absolutely gorgeous and her mom must be an angel....

Kevin seems like he is making big strides as of late. That is fantastic....I know there is a wind tunnel near Tucson Arizona that you can go to that is like jumping out of a plane...I wonder if there is something close by that is similar that you could try. I've always wanted to do that.....not a real jump.

Glad your dad is doing better.....hoping for a complete recovery.
Have a great day,
Anita

I'm glad your dad is out of ICU and pray that he recovers quickly from the MRSA and his operation.

What a beautiful little girl! I love to see the joy in Kevin's face when he's with kids. That would be great if he got into photography since it might get him interested in getting out of the house to take photos. And that's amazing that he remembers jumping out of airplanes! Is this a new remembrance?

I'm thinking of you all and keeping you in my prayers! Take care.

Hey Leslie, I just got back to Tampa this past Monday. Was in SA for Matt's other elbow surgery. His recovery was much better with this one.
Was hoping my time in SA would coincide with yours. Would love to see you and Kevin whenever you are able.
Continue to keep you ALL in my thoughts and prayers!
