Day 528 - Nov 8, 2009

We had Breezy's first meal in her apartment tonight. I stuffed a chicken with all the trimmings and we just kept putting stuff away and cleaning and organizing. We all gorged on dinner and have been pretty lazy since though, lol. The hotel here has a stove top, but no oven and it's been killing me not to have stuffing!

Kevin has been doing really well - and to the person that asked - there has been no build-up of fluid since we pulled the drain. Yay! I am hoping that we go home by the end of the week.

I am a little concerned though about how the divets (where the bolts hold the plate to his skull) are coming back. I am thinking I heard once about the material they use to build the area up breaking down and being reabsorbed into the body. I so hope that's not the case, but I am betting it is. I need to remember to mention to the doctor on Wednesday.

And my sister is flying home first thing in the morning. Kevin enjoyed being with her and it was nice having someone to talk to for me as well.

And other than that, nothing else really happened today. We live such exciting lives, eh?

It's so great that you guys have caught a break. I hope all works out for you.
I do have to say though I miss your smiling face at Armstrong ;-)

Do you guys have someone picking up the cans sitting around town in and around Petrolia? I still see them and want to make sure you get them.
*hugs*

Leslie,

My name is Elizabeth Vittori and I live in Fairfax, VA, just outside Washington, DC. I heard your interview on WTOP today at 6:40 a.m., as I started my day and passed my 3 children, sleeping safely in their beds. I felt guilty for their well-being and my heart broke for you and for your son, for your whole family.

I've been thinking of you all day and as I write this, the hair on my arms is standing at attention.
I'm so sorry for what happened to Kevin and my entire family thanks him for his service to his country.

I heard you say in your interview that "you're just a mom." While your son absolutely, unreservedly deserves state of the art care, and while the fact that he hasn't received it is disgusting reflection on this country, please don't be discouraged. A mother's care and devotion can move mountains. Two of my kids have learning disabilities and developmental delays. In the course of trying to gain access to "best practices" I've met my share of brick walls. But, like you, I've been willing to take on administrators, etc. to see they receive the best. I'm sure you will too. I encourage you to keep advocating for him.

We will be praying for Kevin as a family. If you have access to the piece on WTOP, I'd like to post it on my Facebook page. If there's any other way my family may help your family directly, please let me know (emvittori@verizon.net)

By the way, you are not "just a mom." You are Kevin's mom and advocate and that makes you very important indeed.

Incidentally, I've been thinking a lot about the debate over health care reform and while I think something must be done to make health care more accessible and affordable to average Americans, hearing your story, I sure wouldn't turn it over to the government until Kevin (just a few years older than my eldest) and young men and women like him receive their due. He ought to be at the front of the line.

Good for you for fighting for him. Keep it up.

My thoughts and best,

Elizabeth Vittori

I live in Frederick'md and read about your situation on wtop. As a former soldier and American I am proud of your son and all that he and your family has sacrified. I'm also a father and the pain of dealing with such a Tragedy is something I can not even begin to imagine.

God bless you and my hopes are that your son gets the best care and returns to as a normal life as possible. Stay strong and know that your courage, love and compassion fuel those around you and inspire people like me.
