Day 597 - Jan 16, 2010

So I am dumb and just figured out that this computer has some great video software. I really don't know why I didn't think of this before, but I had Kevin sit down tonight and we recorded a couple of videos.

Here is the first one and it is of him counting to five. He can actually count to 15, but it takes some prodding and he wanted to only do the fluid numbers:

I can't even begin to tell you how many tries it took for us to get this right. Kevin had to approve the videos and he expects perfection, lol.

This next one is of us showing you some of the words Kev can say. Let me just say that this one will really show his funny personality!

Can you all tell how far he has come cognitively? Today we were coming home from dropping Ronnie off at the airport (BUMMER!) and Kevin was reading all of the "OPEN" signs he saw on the expressway. It's the first time that Kevin has ever read out loud. I almost cried, lol.

Today the boys went swimming. It has been warmer here the last few days so I turned the heater on for the pool about 3 days ago to get it warm enough for them to swim.

And now I am going to leave you with some pics of them in the pool. It's a sure thing that we are going to miss Ronnie!

Love the videos!! Kevin has definitely come far. I think you should ask about the tooth issue, looking at where the swelling is, it might be a tooth...looks like it anyway. Hope the situation gets figured out.

Call any dental office. Tooth decay, left not treated, can ruin your heart and your brain.

Dental offices used to give you print outs of the importance of flossing and regular cleaning / checkups. Decay can easily get into the blood stream, etc.

Google it. In a hurry right now or I would send you the link. Nothing to mess with.

Google tooth decay and the brain and heart. Good luck.

Thanks for the videos and pictures.

I note that singing and counting engage both hemispheres in a normal brain (for language, repetition, and pitch) versus normal speaking which is a function primarily of the dominant hemisphere.

Singing seems like a good strategy to engage as much of the brain as possible in the vocalization process.

I have known adults who sing the alphabet song while looking up an entry in a dictionary or telephone book.
For many people songs stick much better than just words.

From other things Leslie has mentioned, it appears that for Kevin singing might be the most effective means to developing his speech.

Kevin & Leslie,

I haven't posted for a long time, but I always read the blog. Kevin seeing you in the videos with you mom is worth a million bucks. Kevin your speech is so good and Leslie your a great teacher. Kevin keep up the hard work and I know your mom will be there to help you along.
I hope to see you guys sometime in the future back here in East Brady.

Be well & god bless,

Awesome job, Kevin! You should be on TV, you have such a natural presence on camera! I was disappointed though that we didn't hear you sing more. Maybe next time. ;)

I'm so glad that Kevin ended up having a good time with Ronnie! It must do wonders for his spirits to just do normal guy stuff and hang out with a friend.

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. Take care.

HAHA, Kevin, I love your rendition of "Money". Thanks so much for the videos. I only saw them for the first time today, as something was wrong with my internet when your mom first posted them. Anyway, it's really cool to see AND hear you. Please make more videos!

Seeing you in video reminds me of an acquaintance of mine who suffered a stroke (and who is also a cutie like you). His speech is very clear, like yours, but he sticks to a few choice phrases. He's a big flirt, and I think the phrase he's practiced most is "Wow, you look very nice today." Always a hit with the ladies :)

You look great, sweetie! Love seeing that twinkle in your eye.
