Day 683 - Apr 12, 2010

We didn't get to go to the apartment today because there wasn't an extra therapist to be able to go with us. It was a real bummer because Kevin was in the best mood I have seen him in in weeks. We got up and went to lunch and we sat in the waiting room with Maritza and Joel for almost a half an hour and he was just so much happier today (for the most part) than I have seen him in a long time. Maybe it's the anti-depressants? Who knows...I just hope he's like this tomorrow because we are scheduled to go at 1pm.

And yay - Kevin got his PICC line removed today! It's been giving him a lot of problems and if we would have had a choice we would have removed it days ago, but it's literally impossible to get blood any other way. So we kept it in until all his cultures came back clear. Yep - KEVIN IS INFECTION FREE!!!! (As of today anyway.)

And this is pretty much it for today. I've got to get to bed here pretty quickly because Kevin's hospital bed is being delivered first thing in the morning. Hopefully I can sleep...it really doesn't come easily...

Just hearing that Kevin was in a good mood made me smile.....

Hope you were able to get some rest Leslie - to say that it is much needed I'm sure is an incredible understatement!

God bless you all and I hope that things go well with the ride and at the apartment today!

Hey Leslie,

Great news on NO infection! I found this article in the National Military Family Association newsletter and thought it may be beneficial to know about.

New Treatment for TBI will be Tested

The Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (DCoE) announced April 2nd they will begin to test the use of a hyperbaric chamber in treating wounded service members with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The study will determine if the use of a pressurized chamber and breathing pure oxygen speeds recovery and decreases headaches, memory loss, and other lingering symptoms. Some clinical research shows the hyperbaric treatment has helped people with brain injuries, but not enough to be conclusive.

According to DCoE, up to 100 Marines from Camp Pendleton will be able to participate. A large chamber is located inside a trailer outside the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. The procedure will last for one hour, five days a week, and for a total of 2.5 months. Pressure inside the hyperbaric chamber will force pure oxygen into the cells.

The initial test involves two types. One group will breathe pure oxygen and the other, referred to as the control group, will breathe normal air under near-similar pressure conditions in order to test the results between the two treatments. Camp Pendleton's role is to help establish the precise treatment regimen and baseline testing that the military will use. After the initial trial period has ended, researchers will evaluate the Marines' experience and then refine the testing protocol with a larger test. This test will use more wounded service members from Camp Pendleton and other bases around the country and will begin late this year or in early 2011. This second phase will involve wounded service members being flown with a buddy to Fort Carson, CO, where they will undergo a battery of tests conducted over four days before returning to their home base for the treatment. When the treatment ends, the service members will be flown back to Colorado for a final assessment. The second phase should involve around 300 wounded service members. Results should be known by late 2012 or early 2013.

Great news that Kevin is infection free! That's a real answer to prayer and a big relief. How did you get the hospital bed so quick? I think that's a miracle too, knowing how "quickly" the VA works. lol!

I'm glad Kevin had a relatively good day yesterday and hope today went well, too. You're both in my thoughts and prayers. Hope you rested well.
