Day 121 - Sept 29, 2008

This is going to be a very quick update. Our second to worst fears were confirmed (the worst being infection or rejection of the shunt). The shunt is either malfunctioning or it is very clogged. We are back in ICU and Kevin is having surgery first thing tomorrow morning. They will either replace the shunt completely or they will replace the malfunctioning part if that is possible. The neurosurgeon is wondering if it is a valve on the shunt, but he can't be sure until he goes into Kevin's head.

So keep us in your thoughts for tonight and over the next few days. I will be staying overnight at the hospital with him tonight and there is no internet in ICU, so I will update as soon as I can tomorrow.

And poor Joyce - what a vacation she is having, huh? I did send her and Breezy to a Steelers bar here in Tampa to watch tonight's game though. At least they will have a little bit of fun.

Ok - gotta get back up to the hospital.

I've been thinking about Kevin and praying for him all day. What a frustrating, but temporary, setback. You can bet I'll be praying tonight and through the next few days!

It's nice that Breezy has someone to hang with, like you said.

I see the word "pray" and "prayer" in almost all of these posts.

Remember Kevin went to church before he left for Afghanistan and sat with the O'Hanlon family.

I think we all need to pray harder now than ever. Positive thoughts are good, but praying to God who needs to listen.

Praying very hard that Kevin does well and gets through this setback.

FAITH and HOPE.

Hang on, Leslie-I hope in some small way it helps to know that even though I've never met you or Kevin or Breezy, I hold you all in my heart. He's going to get through this and you'll be right beside him to witness it all.

I know this must be discouraging for you, but Kevin has pulled through when the odds against him were much worse than this. I believe in my heart that everything will be okay. It is upsetting when things were going so well to have this setback, but that's all it is, a little setback. Know that I am thinking of you and praying for Kevin's quick recovery. I'm glad that Joyce can be there for you and Breezy through this time. You have so many friends and people caring and supporting you from afar, but it's so wonderful that you have a friend right there with you. I'm sure that I'm not alone when I say that I wish I could be "there" for you instead of so far away. Keep your chin up. This too shall pass.
