Day 105 - Sept 13, 2008 - pic included

This has been another good day. Today Kevin laughed for hours with me and Breezy. It was almost just like normal family times. The only way it could have been better was if Kevin was talking. Honestly - he keeps up with everything me and Breezy say. He comprehends nearly everything and let me say, we don't slow our speech down for him at all. We were just cracking jokes and he was laughing right along with us. Then Breezy started making faces and Kevin even made a few back at her. He was also tricking us into doing things and just generally being the jokester he always was. At one point, he even put his hand up at the side of his face so that he didn't have to look at Breezy cause she was being a dork. I could honestly hear him saying that to her too - " I am not even looking at you because you are a dork!". It was just his way of playing with her. I have to say, it's sure nice seeing my son and daughter laugh together. Y'all just can't imagine how awesome Breezy was today (and everyday really). She was just plain being silly to keep him smiling and laughing. It's not only good for him mentally, but we need to start working those facial muscles and his lips. They were burned and haven't really been used at all for nearly 3 months. We have some work to do for sure. Just imagine a stroke patient if you will - where their face doesn't quite move the way it should.

Kevin also played catch today with the doctor. He both threw and caught the ball of gauze. And at one point the gauze started unrolling and he rolled it right back up. I had to laugh too, because he rolled it crooked and when he realized it, he unrolled it and fixed it so that it was done correctly (can you say obsessive compulsive disorder? He gets that from his mom, LOL)

He also learned how to do the thumbs up gesture, but I am not sure if he is aware of what it means. That is about the only thing I am seeing wrong mentally at this point - he can't make any decisions and can't answer questions. So if you ask him 'do you want to watch this?' he just looks at you. Although truthfully, even that is changing. Tonight he made a motion to Breezy to turn the channel when she would stop on one he didn't want.

I did have to laugh too, because he watched 2 episodes of 'Burn Notice' tonight and would not even acknowledge us unless commercials were on. He literally put his hand up to shut us up if we tried to talk while the show was on.

Kevin is also using a kleenex to wipe his nose now. He had a little sniffle today and Breezy just handed him a tissue and he used it with very little encouragement from her.

So now, I am going to share a picture of Kevin with you. This is a picture of what he looks like now. A picture of him brushing his teeth. I am coming at him on his good side - the side where his skull is intact and basically his facial skin is starting to look really good. I am just not ready to show you the other side. Anyway, you can see that he is mostly just a dark pink color and it may be noticeable that his eyes are still puffy and discolored from the grafts. He has to wear the gloves for 23 hours a day for at least a year. He has gloves, sleeves and leggings that he will have to wear. And truthfully, once his feeding tube comes out he will need to wear compression garments on his chest/back as well. His left pinkie is splinted yet as we had some tendon showing up until recently. You will notice he doesn't have a full head of hair. We don't know what that will end up being like. It's partly due to the burns and partly due to the medications he is on. His eyebrows still need to fully grow back too (sections are there). They did once already (maybe twice?), but they keep falling out too. The bandage on his neck is from his trach removal and you will notice everything is padded. He just moves around so much and we have to protect the 'good' part of his brain that is completely vulnerable due to his skull being removed. So anyway, I think I explained everything and if not - feel free to ask. And now...here he is:

Next Photo shoot you need it to be a family photo! After all, the 3 of you are in this together! He looks great considering what he has been through, a little on the thin side but now that he is starting to eat he might put the pounds back on.

Does Kev have to still wear the goggles and get the drops? Looks like he has perfect control over the tooth brush..isn't that wonderful!

I pretty much know what the left side looks like. A friend had a cycle accident and had brain surgery. Until they put a plate in it looked pretty bad too. Good thing is...All that can be fixed in time.

What Kev looks like now is not so important. The best thing is that he knows what you and Breezy look like!

Praying for more good things to come and especially speech!

Leslie,

I found myself almost afraid to scroll down to "see" Kevin...when I slowly did...I was quite surprised.

He looks SO MUCH BETTER than I thought he would. With all he has been through..BRAVO KEVIN.

Prayers work..no doubt about it. If anyone ever doubted...look at Kevin. Each day progress is made.

I find myself thinking about how many lives Kevin has touched..and possibly changed simply by knowing him through your blog.

God most certainly has a purpose for Kevin's life. I just know it.

Stay Strong, Leslie. I am so proud of you, Kevin and Brianna. : )

Every day you post now, there is some new progress or exciting bit to read about when it comes to Kevin's recovery and it is very inspiring and uplifting to read. I have been following along since...I believe day 20 or so, not quite sure...and the steps and strides he has made are so very wonderful. More than anyone could hope for and the important thing is he's not done yet and there will be many more to come!

And it is wonderful to 'meet' Kevin for the first time (other than the small photos on your banner) and I have to admit, he looks great! Much better than I expected and don't apologize for not wanting to show his 'other side' just yet. Everything takes time to heal up!

Thoughts and prayers with you from Southern California! Yay Kevin! Stay strong.

Leslie,
Kevin looks fantastic, his burns are healing wonderfully. Often I copy and paste your blog to send to Clark in Iraq, it is so uplifting. I'll echo some others and say we want a family picture!

Of course I have never seen Kevin other than the pictures at the top of your blog but....he looks about 1000% times better than I expected. After all he's been through it's amazing. If I saw him walking past at the mall (and hopefully some day I will ;) ) I wouldn't even notice anything unusual. Good angle or not, things are really looking up.

Thanks for sharing!

the communication system that i use with cole was called "PECS" "Picture Exchange Communication System".
it can be as simple as a red circle for "no" and a green circle for "yes"... and to answer you point to things. (example)
and here's a link to an example...

Kevin looks awesome! I know it took alot for you to share a picture of him. Leslie he looks the same as the pictures you have at work (or on this main page)only a little thinner and pinker. He has accepted the healing very well.

I am glad to hear his humor is coming back too. I know hw was quite the jokester before the accident.
Here's to another great day!

Wow- I was afraid to keep moving down, but I'm so glad I saw that picture. He looks amazing for what he has been through. I never knew him before the accident, but I read your blog first thing every morning, and feel like I know all of you. God has truly been with him through this battle, and he will continue to be with him until he is up and moving.
You and Breezy are doing a great job of working with him. You two are the biggest reason he has come so far - in all these months you have never given up. Even though you may have been down, you never let him hear that in your voices.
God bless all three of you.
GO KEVIN!!!

Wow! Kevin you look great!! The love and everything your mother and Breezy have done to help you get this far has paid off!! Keep up the good work, and listen to what the therapists and especially your family tries to help you do, and you will continue to move in the right direction......towards coming home!
I agree with others in saying...I think next time it should be a family picture of all of you!
Keep up the good work! Your blog, Leslie, is SO uplifting and I am guessing has helped numerous other families that are in your position as I speak. YOUR family....Leslie, Breezy, and of course Kevin...are an inspiration to others in seeing how you take a horrific situation and make it possible to turn it into something amazing! Thank you so much for sharing everything with us!

Happy hello to you three wonderful people. Your blog is the first thing I do every morning and today was fantastic. Kevin has progressed by leaps and bounds. Kevin is so fortunate to have such a devoted mom and sister. My heart is filled with joy for all of you. We may never meet but you have become a part of my family. I have prayed for you all every single night before I pray for anybody else.
Thank you for sharing this road to victory.

Dear Leslie, How wonderful to read your and Breezy's enthusiasm about the leaps and bounds Kevin is making in his recovery. Our mutual friend, Vic, sent me to your blog; I think she feels my reading your story would help me cope with mine! It's awesome how people all over the world can help each other personally even though we've never 'met.' I cannot imagine the stress and heartbreak you have been through but you must be some kind of Momma to keep such a positive attitude about Kevin. I am adding your family to my prayer list and hope it helps. Thanks for sharing your hope and joy.
Hugs,
Liv

Kevin looks wonderful! Thank you for sharing such a private thing with us. The courage you have shown throughout this ordeal has been an example to me. I don't even know Kevin and yet when I was reading your blog for Sat., I wanted to cheer with each thing he did. It is truly a miracle! I will continue to pray that God will be with all of you and that Kevin's recovery will continue in the miraculous way it has been so far.

Holy cow Kevin continues to kick butt! I had been away for a few days, come back and here he is playing catch, hanging out and having some fun, making great progress every day. Wow. Kevin, you are incredible. And so are you Leslie and Breezy - you are all incredible inspirations. And I have to say that I agree that a family pic is definitely in order - you're all part of the team! :-)
