Day 320 - Apr 16, 2009

Boy! Kevin really hated the beach!! It took me a half hour to get him to even get out of the car and into the special wheelchair that would go in the sand. He despised it on site and just wouldn't budge. To be truthful, we actually left the beach and were going home (everyone else stayed - just him and I left) and when he saw how upset I was that we weren't staying - he opted to turn around. I shouldn't have bothered though, he was just miserable the whole time and we left within an hour. And let me tell ya - it ain't easy pushing him over the sand for just 45 minutes! My arms still hurt!

So, until he can walk - he will not be going back to the beach at all.

Tomorrow we were going to go to Busch Gardens, but when I picked up a power chair he said he wouldn't get in it. I told him he either got in it or stayed home. He says he's staying home. Damn! We are going to be so limited now because he realizes so much more. Frankly, I know he's just embarrassed to be in a different kind of wheelchair than his normal one, but it's something he is going to have to adjust to.

And now I need to get back to unpacking...

It breaks my heart that Kevin thinks there is something so wrong with him that people would not accept him or that he needs not to live his life. I know there are the few out there, who no matter what, would not understand BUT I think the majority of people are so caught up in their own lives they don't even notice OR if they knew the real story would be so inspired by him. Hopefully he can get stronger emotionally with help from the male counselor and embrace the chance he has been given. You are doing a wonderful job with Kevin. Maybe this is just a bump he has to get over. I don't think the beach incident is that bad. He at least went and tried ...I feel sad that he doesn't want to try Busch Gardens. He probably would have a great time. Yet, this week has been a very busy week for you all. Maybe he is just overwhelmed, wants to enjoy the house a little, and next week or the week after will be better.

Praying for you all.

Perhaps does Kevin wants to be moving under his own power - whether walking or in in a wheelchair - even if he doesn't go as fast or as far?

Hey there Leslie, Kev & Breezy -

Been away from the computer for a few days, but you've all be in my thoughts and prayers, each and every day. What a bummer that Kev didn't like the beach, sounds like it was quite a day. At least there was a good workout in there? :-)

Hope things work out in getting help with moving your stuff down. Good grief. In my mind they should pay for that, and your new house to boot! By the way the house is GORGEOUS!! Congratulations and I know that it's a "home" already. Filled with love.

Kevin looks fantastic in the latest pics (not that he didn't before, BTW!!) - you can actually see how far he has come. He is just such a miracle.

God bless you all, there's thoughts, prayers, support and loads and loads of extra special Angel Hugs coming your way every day.

I so agree with what Kris said. The military should be footing the bill for all of this, the house, moving, renovations, and whatever else you guys need or want!!. I notice the government can hand out money to all the hot shot bankers, etc. but when it comes to the people who are keeping their behinds safe they seem to just ignore them for the most part. I'll get off my soapbox now.
Give Kevin time and I'm sure he will adjust. Look how far he has come already. He's a fighter just like his Mom. As always we will continue to pray for all of you.

I don't understand the power chair thing. But, if he wants one that looks like a wheelchair, then you need to get an electric wheelchair instead of the power chair. I have one of those too. It's not for off the road but goes fine for things like Busch gardens, Disney, Malls. Any where there is a black top or pavement.

They look just like the wheel chair he now has. There are flippers on the back that you can make it NOT with power so he can push himself, BUT, when he gets tired and you can't push his weight, you flip the flippers and turn the foot holder from the sides to the front and turn on the power.
This is what they look like:

Aw, that's a shame Kevin didn't enjoy the beach. I think you're right that he will adjust to a new chair and hopefully soon. At least he gave it a chance and maybe he'll think it over and change his mind. I hope so and can understand it's disappointing for you, as well. I guess it's all a process he has to go through.

I'll be thinking of you and praying for you all.
