Day 40 - July 10, 2008

Not a super great day today. One of the docs noticed that Kevin's head had grown substantially in the last couple of days and scheduled a CT Scan. It turns out he has a lot more fluid built up around his brain. So tomorrow they are going to go in and drain some of it off. The procedure will be done in his room so there is no need for anesthesia and that's a good thing. But it's still dangerous because each time there is any form of incision you run the risk of infection. At this point, Kev has no infections at all and I am really hoping it stays that way. Even his kidneys are looking fantastic!!

And I am thinking that Kevin's sense of taste is returning. Obviously I am not sure about this, but I put a spearmint flavored moisturizing cream on his lips often times during the day. He licks it off immediately and you can tell he brings his tongue back into his mouth and acts like he is eating the cream. And one time I dabbed some directly onto his tongue and from then on he would hold his tongue out until I dribbled some on it. It was like he was going to town on it. I wonder if he can smell too? Hmmm...will have to do some experimenting tomorrow maybe...

That's basically all that happened today. Brianna's friend Jen has been visiting for a few days but she left this afternoon. And Moe is coming down tomorrow for a week. We were planning to go on vacation this week together (with my sister, Kim) to Florida to see Chrissy, but Texas it is. Although, this is definitely not a vacation. But still, it will be nice to have her here.

Leslie,

God has given you such strength to endure. You are a very strong woman.

May your week with Moe be a wonderful vacation. She will bring you love, companionship, support and another shoulder..which I'm sure will be so welcome.

You'll get to Florida to see Chrissy..just not in the time frame as planned for your vacation with Moe. That will just mean Kevin is going to be getting more help once you reach Florida. Another positive event.

Once you get to Chrissy's house and make your turkey dinner with all the trimmings, I'm sure your wonderful cakes will be on the menu as well. You were one terrific baker. : ) Everyone there is in for a wonderful treat.

If Kevin loves Spearmint lip moisture so much, wait till you see how he reacts when he gets even a small bit of real food..flavorful food. Those days will come.

Praying for Kevin tomorrow, as always. Once again, thank you for keeping us updated each evening..no matter how totally wiped out or down you may be. We appreciate it. : )

Try and get some sleep. Rest your weary head. God Bless..and give you peace.

Leslie,
That is SO cute about the lip balm....
When your friend Moe comes take just one day for yourself even if it's half a day. Go get a pedicure or massage and have a Starbucks Caramel Frappuccino......yummmmmm.

I read an article last week by a Dr. Robert Doman who was a doc at Walter Reed. He said patients in a coma get too much quiet and not enough stimulation.

He used sensory stimulation on patients in deep coma's..taste, touch, smell and hearing. Played a radio on and off, touched the tongue with strong flavors, used strong smells and even put ice on the tummy to see if there was a reaction.

When the eyes opened he used blinking Christmas lights strung around the bed, balloons, and even bright color strips on the ceiling which was the patients main viewing area. He said it made a big difference in the patients brain function.

Maybe when Kev gets out of the sterile burn center you can do these things.

I hope today's procedure goes well and Kev is more comfortable afterwards.

Leslie,
Moe will be there soon and you have to promise to take a few hours off and do something fun. You deserve it. Your days are painfully long. I talked to Moe about the place Breezy found. You have to try it! We go there every time we go to Myrtle Beach. Hope everything goes well today. Thinking of you,

Dear Leslie and Breezy,
that message about the lip balm was so touching. We forget such simple things but important things we do each day. God bless Kevin. We continue to pray and we pray tomorrow is a better day. Enjoy the people that come to visit you. You are loved. Again, rest when you can. A great day for his next procedure is in our prayer.
Love, The Reeves Gang.

That's interesting about the flavored chapstick. It makes you wonder what else he would respond to, like familiar scents such as your perfume or the scent of his favorite dinner. I hope his procedure went well today. I'll be praying that he will stay infection-free.
