Day 37 - July 7, 2008

Kevin did 2 things today that are not normal daily things. First - he moved that right arm quite a few times today. Hurray! I would move his arm so that it lay beside him and he would put it back on his hip. I would say he did this at least 7 or 8 times. I was so excited. This was something he would do back in the beginning when he was just starting to move his left arm, so maybe it's a sign...

Second - he yawned 3 times! I have never seen him yawn and frankly - why would a person in a coma yawn? I wonder if he was kinda awake then? I have tried to find out on the internet if people in a coma yawn, but can't find anything yet. It was exciting!

We did have an issue with his left eye though. I can't say this for sure - but I think he was trying to force his eye open and he ripped his stitch a little bit. Because he is on a blood thinner, it bled for hours. It just wouldn't stop so I asked the nurse to call the doc in case blood was also building up behind the eye. When we took the goggle off to check things out I was appalled. His eye was completely covered by this huge clot of blood. GROSS! The nurse and I cleaned it all up and I was pretty proud of myself for not gagging. We did find out that there was no build-up so we are in the clear about that. Thank goodness.

So Kev is going in for surgery first thing in the morning. He is having the last 5% of his body grafted and some form of surgery on his eyes. I believe they are just cutting part of his lid and below his eye to release some of the tension. Keep us in your thoughts tomorrow - surgery is always so scary. Complications abound when your body is already weak and Kevin has lost so much weight that he looks weak. I know he's not - he keeps lifting that leg with the metal splint on it and it has to be heavy, but still, he's not up to par. So again, just keep us in your thoughts.

Leslie, Prayers for you and your family are a priority in my life. You are all thought of everyday. Our love for you and the "kids" grows with each waking moment. I'm so happy there was some movement. God will keep us all going in the right direction. Just trust in Him. We will pray not only for Kevin but those who are going to preform the surgery to guide there hands and keep Kevin safe. Love to you all. Aunt Judy

Leslie,

First of all, I think you are related to the Energizer Bunny..I don't know how you are still going. We all say we'd lay on a road and have a mac truck run over us to save our own child..I believe that. We would much rather go through any sickness or bad situation for them, than to watch them go through it. You are showing us all, the strength and love a Mother has for her child.

You ask for thoughts..prayers have got Kevin to where he is now. Please continue to pray hard for Kevin and his family..ALL of us. If you are not praying..just talk to God, as He will hear and listen. Kevin has and is going through pure hell. If it is possible will you let us know when he's out of surgery ? If you have to go far away to use the internet..do not bother. Thank you. It is most important to be with him.

My Grandmother was in a coma and one of the things that amazed me most was to see her eyes closed, yet watch her yawn. It was as though she was just asleep and occasionally would move a little..but yes, most definitely yawn. Once she even stretched her arms as she yawned. She was in a coma because she had a stroke ( at age 91 ). No need to search internet for yawning and coma..we are proof and the doctor confirmed.

I know as a caregiver, you need to get rest and a break. A little break for each of you, is still a break. I am so glad Brianna is there with you. I'm so glad your Mother and Anthony could come too. Researchers are now seeing what a tough job it is to be a caregiver, where years ago, it was not given much thought.

You guys keep reaching milestones..Brianna just turned 24..Kevin just turned 20 and you keep leaping over very hard hurdles. YAY..all positive steps.

You may think you are complaining..but you are doing your job as a Mother, with such beauty and grace.

The best job in the entire world..being their Mother. No matter how old our babies get to be. : )

Still praying and sending positive thoughts your way each and every single night and day.

God Bless you all. Each day Kevin's story grows..there must be a reason for all of this, as bad as it is.

Take care of each other and never forget how much we ALL care about you. : )

Such good news about Kevin moving and yawning! And as others have said, I know you are moving through this on legs bolstered by a mother's love and strength.

You got all the prayers, love blessings we all can give!

Kevin, Leslie and Brianna, God be with you every second of the surgery.

Always, love, hugs and prayers.

Les,you have the prayers honey, I would have to work to push you guys out of my mind you,Kevin and Breezy are there 24-7. Kevin needs a little oxygen that's why he is yawning. It is truly a miracle what our body will do for us even while we are resting. God, plese give Kevin, the Doctors and his wonderful Mom and Sister the strength that they need today and the days that follow to make Kevin whole again. Love Pam

what wonderful news that you are seeing some movement again. just read yesterday's blog and i am remembering all of you including the doctors, nurses and anyone that has anything to do with kevin. i pray that God will touch kevin through them.
i also pray peace for kevin {as it sounds like he might be becoming more aware} that God will cover him with peace, comfort and security and that His will would be done in kevin's life.
for you and breezy, i pray that God will continue to sustain, encourage, comfort and provide for you. that He would be near to you.

Leslie, I don't know if you took the time to look at my blog but I lost a son to a brain injury and I know how every movement gives hope. I never would have made it without writing my web page and all the total strangers, many in the same situation, who wrote back to me. Strength in numbers maybe.

There are almost 40 quilt blocks posted on my blog from mothers across America for the Quilts for Kevin project, with 60 more being made. So many mothers across America praying for God's will to be done & for you and Breezy to find comfort & strength.

Because of your blog we have been able to hold hands across the country and pray for Kevin. Thank you for letting me give back to you what others gave to me when I needed a place to go with my anguish.
